UNLV Baseball Defeats San Diego State 8-1 For First-Ever MWC Victory
April 7, 2000 LAS VEGAS- The UNLV baseball team defeated San Diego State 8-1 on Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium to post its first-ever Mountain West Conference victory. UNLV improved to 8-25 overall and 1-10 in the MWC and snapped its seven-game losing streak. San Diego State dropped to 20-18 overall and 8-5 in the MWC.
The story of the game was sophomore left-hander Ryan Olson. He posted his second straight complete-game and his first collegiate nine inning complete-game. He allowed a two-out solo home run in the first inning to right fielder Paul Lockhart.
He then slammed the door on the Aztecs over the final eight innings. He retired 13 straight batters and retired the side in the second through the fifth innings. He allowed three hits, walked one and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts. He retired the last seven out of eight batters and struck out the side in the ninth inning. Overall, he retired 24 of 29 total batters faced.
UNLV scored three runs each in the third and fifth innings. The key hits in the third inning were a RBI double by junior first baseman Trent Kitsch and a RBI single by junior right fielder Adam Manley. In the fifth inning, Kitsch delivered a two-out two run home run, his fifth of the season, to give UNLV a 5-1 lead. Senior designated hitter Nate Kaup then tripled home Manley to increase UNLV's lead to 6-1.
Kitsch was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, Manley was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, Kaup was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and senior second baseman Cody Okuda was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to seven games.
