UNLV Hopes Slipper Fits In Second Round
The UNLV men's basketball team won its first round NCAA Tournament game on Thursday, beating Kent State 71-58 to win its second consecutive opening-round matchup. The Runnin' Rebels are making their second straight trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since winning the national title in 1990 and returning to the Final Four in 1991. Eighth-seeded UNLV will face top-seeded and fourth-ranked Kansas on Saturday, March 22 in the second round. The game is scheduled to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Wisconsin/Kansas State game, which is scheduled to begin at 3:20 p.m. CDT/1:20 p.m. PDT. The games will be televised live on CBS. UNLV, which owns a 27-7 record, enters the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a season-high-tying five-game win streak and has won eight of its last nine games. Last year, UNLV was the No. 7 seed in the Midwest and advanced to the Sweet 16 by defeating 10th-seeded Georgia Tech and upsetting second-seeded Wisconsin. [ + ]

Joe Darger made four 3-pointers and had 18 points, Wink Adams added 17 and UNLV tied an NCAA tournament record by holding Kent State to just 10 points in the first half of a 71-58 victory in the first round Thursday.
