Final Week Underway

April 16, 2007

LAS VEGAS - With gorgeous mid-April weather enveloping Southern Nevada, the UNLV football team returned to Rebel Park for its final Monday session of Spring Practice 2007.

Enjoying the perfect football temperatures, the squad went through a 20-period practice from about 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Also in attendance were members of visiting coaching staffs from Southern Utah University, Azusa Pacific and MidAmerica Nazarene University, which is an NAIA school located in Olathe, KS.

For the Rebels, it was the final day to impress coaches before the annual Spring Game Draft scheduled for Tuesday. The draft will set the rosters for the Scarlet and Gray teams, who will do battle this Friday at Sam Boyd Stadium from 6-7:30 p.m. As always, the public is invited to attend the spring game, which is free of charge.

SEEING RED

The face and the number were familiar but the color of the jersey was not as No. 24 Lafayette Fletcher (Anaheim, CA/Morningside HS) took the field dressed in Rebel Red for the first time on Monday. Slated to be a sophomore running back in 2007 after rushing for five yards on seven carries and catching seven passes for 33 yards last fall, Fletcher has made the move to defense and will instead compete for time at cornerback.

"Lafayette is a very quick, athletic player who is taking the opportunity right now to move to corner with the idea of competing to play," UNLV head coach Mike Sanford said. "It was a combination of what we thought would be best for him and the team and he was agreeable to the move."

CHAMPIONS CHOICES

After viewing film from last Friday's spring scrimmage, the staff identified 12 players who graded out well enough to be named Champions. "These guys reached a set percentage level that puts them at a championship level," said Sanford.

TE Chris Butler (Canyon Country, CA/College of the Canyons)
OL Tim Goins (Madison, AL/Bob Jones HS)
