NORMAN, Okla. -
UNLV senior golfer Scott Lander was one of seven collegiate golfers selected to play in the 2001 Palmer Cup presented by CSFBdirect, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Monday.
Lander will play for the United States team in the Ryder-Cup style tournament that features eight of America's best male collegiate golfers competing against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. The competition will take place on June 27-28 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
"We're very proud of Scott," UNLV men's golf head coach Dwaine Knight said. "This is a tremendous opportunity, and for Scott to earn this privilege in his senior year is truly a testament to how hard he has worked."
Joining Lander on this year's U.S. squad are Nick Cassini and Erik Compton of Georgia, John Engler and Lucas Glover of Clemson, Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech and Chris Wisler of East Tennessee State, with one other player to be announced. Texas A&M's Bob Ellis will serve as the team's head coach.
The Kingman, Ariz., native becomes the fourth Rebel to be represented at the Palmer Cup. Knight was chosen as the head coach for the U.S. in 1997, the first year the competition was introduced. He was joined by Rebel senior Ted Oh as the U.S. defeated the Great Britain/Ireland squad, 19-5, at Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla.
Jeremy Anderson first played in the event as a sophomore in 1998, helping the U.S. battle to a 12-12 tie at the Old Course and New Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. He returned to the U.S. lineup in 1999, leading the U.S. to a 17.5-6.5 win at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
