Rebels Claim Nike Cup Title

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team won the team title at the 2008 UC Irvine/Nike Cup which concluded on Saturday night, while the Rebel women moved up one more spot to finish in third place.

The Rebel men finished the meet with 1,249.5 points, ahead of second place Air Force (1,096.5) and third place BYU (852.5). Winning an individual on the final day was sophomore John Mendoza, who swam a time of 15:12.10 in the 1650 free, and his time was a NCAA 'B' cut, as was teammate Kier Maitland's time of 15:19.07.

UNLV scored 850 points on the women's side for a third place finish. Winning the women's title was BYU with 1,076 points, and San Jose State was second with 954. UNLV won one individual title on Saturday, with Marva Harpak winning her second event of the meet, this time in the 100 free with a time of 50.41.

Both teams will have a month off before returning to action with a dual meet at UC Irvine on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 pm.
