To CHAMPS Class
April 22, 2008
The final CHAMPS/Life Skills course at UNLV took place on Monday, April 21st. While all student-athletes can attend, juniors and seniors were strongly encouraged to come learn valuable career development skills. Two weeks prior, Career Services presented a résumé workshop to student-athletes. On the 21st, students brought their completed résumés to a workshop with Target.
Target brought six representatives from California and Nevada, including Group Assets Protection Leader Mark Robinson, an executive in the western region. He kicked off the class talking about translating athletic skills gained at UNLV into traits beneficial in the workplace. Other employees represented the Human Resources and Training divisions. The Store Manager for the store on Flamingo just north of campus was present, as well as the District Manager based in Las Vegas.
These Target employees served as valuable resources for UNLV student-athletes, going over what types of candidates they look for in job applications, the dos and don'ts of job interviewing, and some helpful tips in preparing for a long-term career after college and athletics. Melody Nua, a junior from the volleyball team, volunteered to role play an interview with the District Manager. After the mock interview, students and Target team members critiqued her, and the District Manager told her, "Hell yeah I would hire you!"
Students asked the panel several questions about filling out applications, how to answer probing interview questions, and if they can get a job with little work experience. They learned that employees value how student-athletes balance school and athletics. The attainment of a degree with those constraints is recognized by employers, and it is understood that student-athletes may not have time to find a part-time job while studying and competing at the Division I level.
