After being held scoreless in its previous four games, the UNLV women's soccer team erupted for five goals to claim a 5-0 victory over Utah Valley State on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. With the win in their final non-conference game of the season, the Rebels improved to 5-3-4, while UVSU dropped to 2-9-1. The five goals were also tied for third-most ever scored in a game in school history, as does the five-goal win margin.
UNLV held an overwhelming 31-3 edge on shots, but didn't get on the scoreboard until late in the first half. The first score came from freshman Kristen Shim, who dribbled through the Wolverine defense before unleashing a shot from inside the box to the left post for the score in the 44th minute.
The Rebel lead went to 2-0 in the 52nd minute, when Brianna Moore passed off to Ashly O'Harrow, who sent a hard high shot to the back of the goal. A UNLV corner kick led to the third goal, as Katie Carney's kick from the right corner found Brie Kuhne on the left post and Kuhne deflected the ball into the net for the score in the 61st minute.
Carney assisted on the next score as well, as on a breakaway she passed off to Niki Connolly who scored from 10 yards out to make the lead 4-0 in favor of UNLV in the 68th minute. Connolly then finished the scoring for the Rebels with her second goal of the afternoon, off a cross from Elizabeth Jacobs in the 77th minute.
Alicia Lugo played the majority of time in the goal for the Rebels and made two saves, while Michele Barbone was in the net for the final 13 minutes to help UNLV earn the shutout, its seventh of the season and fifth in the last six games. Mallary Schott finished with 13 saves and five goals allowed for the Wolverines.
UNLV will next host Utah in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday at 3 pm, in a game televised live by The MTN network, at Peter Johann Field.
