UNLV Sweeps First Round Of Weekly Honors

Feb. 13, 2007

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball season started on the right foot with the Rebels opening the season 5-0 after the Alexis Resort Kick-Off Classic. With the victories and positive performances by the student-athletes, Kendall Fearn and Christie Robinson were recognized today by the Mountain West Conference as the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Fearn started all five games at first base and hit for a .500 average with six hits in 12 opportunities. She smashed out two home runs and two doubles, while collecting six RBI and five runs scored. She amassed 14 total bases and held a 1.167 slugging percentage. In the season opener against Tulsa, the Rebels trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth and she led off the three-run comeback with a solo home run to deep center. In game two versus Tulsa, she helped UNLV pull within one at 4-3, with a run-scoring double and then scored on a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, she led off with a double and her pinch-runner scored to even the game at 4-4. Against Marshall and trailing 3-2, she led off the fourth with a single to center and moved to second on a throwing error. An RBI single by the following hitter brought home Fearn's pinch-runner to tie the game at 3-3. Against Illinois-Chicago, Fearn put UNLV up 2-1 with a two-run home run in the first inning.

Robinson came out of the bullpen in her first two appearances and earned a start in her third. She went 2-0 with one save in 10.0 inning pitched. She allowed one run on six hits, struck out eight batters and walked one. The Opposition hit .167 in 36 at-bats. In the first game of the season, Robinson came into the contest against Tulsa with a 3-2 lead, one out and the tying run on second base. She promptly shut down the Tulsa offense with back-to-back strikeouts to earn the save. In the second meeting with Tulsa, she relieved the UNLV starter with two out in the first for a win. She threw the final 6.1 innings without allowing a run and letting only one base runner go as far as second base. She struck out four and gave up four hits. She picked up her second win in a five inning, run-ruled affair against Nicholls State.

This is the first honor for Fearn. Robinson has now won the pitcher of the week honor for the third time. She was named the pitcher of the week twice in 2006, Feb. 14 and May 2.
