Another Day, Another Record For Gantcheva
For the third time in her illustrious career, UNLV tennis star Elena Gantcheva has earned a bid to the NCAA Division I Singles Championship as the 64-woman field was announced Wednesday afternoon. In addition, she and partner Kristina Nedeltcheva were listed as the first alternate for the 32-team doubles tournament. [ + ] Armed with one of the nation's 31 automatic bids, the 37th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team is headed to an NCAA Regional for the second straight season and seventh time in its history as the championship bracket was released on Tuesday. [ + ] The second-seeded UNLV women's tennis team broke top-seeded TCU's 13-match winning streak and stunned the 23rd-ranked Horned Frogs 4-2 on their home courts on Saturday to win the Mountain West Conference tournament crown and secure the automatic bid to the NCAA championships. [ + ] The second-seeded UNLV women's tennis team will play in its fifth Mountain West Conference championship match after storming past third-seeded New Mexico 4-0 in one semifinal at the Friedman Tennis Center on Friday. [ + ] The second-seeded UNLV women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championships for the seventh straight year by posting a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over seventh-seeded Colorado State at the Friedman Tennis Center on Thursday. [ + ] UNLV senior Elena Gantcheva has become the first women's tennis player in league history to win at least a share of three MVPs when she was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in a vote of the league's nine head coaches.
