Rebels Nip Cats In Reno

Sept. 8, 2007

Final Stats

RENO, Nev. - The UNLV volleyball team (7-1) continued its winning ways Saturday morning with a 3-0 sweep of the Washington State Cougars (8-2) in the AT&T Invitational in Reno, Nev. The Rebels have now won six-straight matches after beginning the season at 1-1. The six-match winning streak equals the most consecutive wins by a Rebel squad since early in the 2006 season. UNLV won the match by a score of 30-19, 30-22, 30-26.

The 7-1 start to the season ranks in a tie for the best-ever in the program's history. The 1997 and 1999 squads began 7-1, as well.

UNLV's offense hit on all cylinders as the Rebels out-hit WSU .257-to-.094. The Rebels opened up the match with a .312 hitting percentage in game one compared to the Cougars lowly .054. Game two was much of the same as UNLV hit .278 to WSU's .026. The third game was close as UNLV registered a .195 percentage to WSU's .190.

Melody Nua was the lone Rebel to register a double-double with a combination of 35 assists and 10 digs. Nua even racked up three kills for a .600 hitting percentage.

Maria Aladjova, Lauren Miramontes and Jessica Walters each tallied double-digit kill figures. Aladjova led the match with 16 kills, while Miramontes and Walters had 12 and 10, respectively.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jada Walker had a match-high 11 digs, while Miramontes blocked four shots (one solo). Erin Greenwood assisted on four blocks, as well.

The Cougars were held without an attacker reaching double-digits in the kill department. Jackie Albright led the Cougars with nine kills. Maureen Perez led the squad with 32 assists, while Kelly Hyder was tops in digs with 11.

UNLV returns to action at 5:00 pm, with its final match of the AT&T Invitational against Hofstra.
